going to the chapel.

A little peak at what took place in the studio this weekend.

My great friends Tina and Louis asked me to paint them a sign for the Candy Bar at their wedding in June. Their colours are black & white with light pink accents, so when it came to the design I thought soft, pretty and elegant with a touch of rustic.

Here's what I did..

I found an old piece of plywood which was the perfect size, yay! No power saw needed.

My first step was to sand the front and back of the plywood with an electric hand sander.

After that I filled the holes and dings with Lepage wood filler and let it dry for about a half an hour before sanding it smooth.

Next I gave the front and back of the plywood two coats of an off-white Benjamin Moore acrylic paint and when both coats were dry I went over the whole board with the hand sander giving it a weathered and rustic look. I concentrated on the areas that would weather first like the corners and the edges.

Then, I sketched out the design and gave it a clean, crisp coat of black acrylic paint.

One corner of the board had started to separate so I simply filled the gap with carpenter's glue, held it together with a few clamps and let it dry for a good three hours.

Ét voila!

The design is simple but has a big impact. I really love the contrast between the weathered wood and the crisp black of the design and text.

The sign adds a personal touch to the wedding decor and I'm so glad I could help by adding my own artistic style to their big day.

It's just a little over a month away and I couldn't be more excited!
